BAYs breast cancer memorial garden

SAN FRANCISCO, CA

The Bay Area Young Survivors (BAYS) Breast Cancer Memorial Garden in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park opens in 2025 and provides a contemplative sanctuary in which to gather and honor those who have died of metastatic breast cancer. Entirely funded by BAYS, their inscriptions of hope, vulnerability and strength are embedded within the walking surface and narrate the experience for the visitor. While the garden commemorates members who have passed, it is also a living memorial recognizing those who still contend with the disease and is, as the first phrase upon entry reads, “a place for all those impacted by cancer”. The garden is largely made up of California native plants and invites hummingbirds, bees and other native pollinators to come visit. It is the first memorial at Golden Gate Park in over 30 years, and the first of its kind in the country to honor those with metastatic breast cancer. InsideOut has proudly worked with BAYS for over ten years to help make this project a reality.
